Quality all round

Take a new international museum, place it in a setting that is already rich in cultural and architectural highlights, and mix it all to create an unalloyed delight for all visitors.

That is the recipe behind a unique synergy effect that will make HEART the site of even more than just sublime art. For example, the selection of one-off design objects sold at the HEART museum shop was created in close co-operation with the design and business academy TEKO, which is located right across from the museum.

HEART has taken a deliberately innovative approach to the museum shop, which is located in the museum foyer. Together with TEKO, HEART has developed a concept for including one-off design objects in the selection on offer, creating a distinctive identity that sets it apart from conventional museum shops.

One-off designs tied to HEART
- Our vision is to expand the conventional museum shop concept, which means that HEART does not simply offer art books and memorabilia; it also presents a selection of design objects relating to the museum itself, its permanent collection, and its changing exhibitions, says Lise Amby, TEKO.

In connection with the official opening of HEART she acted as project manager for two TEKO students, Jacob Thrane and Safine Lykke. Drawing inspiration from the museum’s permanent collection and the inaugural exhibition of art by Jannis Kounellis, they created a series of exceptional one-off products for the shop. These include large bags made from banners advertising previous exhibitions held at the museum’s old setting, as well as elegant handbags and shoulder bags made from brightly coloured recycled sails donated by the local ski and surf shop Nautic. In their hunt for suitable recycled materials the two TEKO students also found their way to a sailmaker in Frederikshavn.

- Here, we were allowed to buy the old awnings and the smoking room from the Royal Yacht Dannebrog whose sails have been turned into marvellous one-of-a-kind jackets and skirts, says Lise Amby.

The shop also features unique stuffed toys shaped as imaginary animals drawn by 1st and 2nd grade pupils from the local Bifrost school in Herning. Similarly, the TEKO students have designed stylish T-shirts for the shop.

- Jacob and Safine were in charge of everything from concept development to planning and project management and onwards to the final manufacturing of the design objects. Their feats include securing a sponsorship from the accessory company A-Tex, which has donated beautiful labels and hang-tags made from fabric and cork, Lise Amby explains.

Tasty treats
In addition to unique design objects and books, visitors at HEART can also purchase food-related items such as the beautiful art cups created by Illy Café. Furthermore, a collaboration with Danish gourmet company Løgismose allows the shop to offer exquisite comestibles, fine wines, and a specially selected “speciality of the month” chosen to reflect current events at HEART.

- We offer simple, delicious products that can make your family supper a little more convenient after a long day at the museum. The first period has an Italian theme, so we have selected a scrumptious pasta sauce and top-quality pasta. Heat up the sauce, boil the pasta, and your meal is ready, says Christian Grønlykke, manager of Løgismose Vin A/S.
